title / label / notes

10 inch 78 rpm
Since this ain't no museum, my aim is not to depict actually existing specimen of 78 rpm records,
but to show the labels as pristine as workmanlike possible

even if this - in some cases - takes a whole lot of my time to photoshop process the initial data

originally unissued takes from same session:
- Cannon Ball Blues (45430-1) (3:15) [Blues Images no 8]
- Dry Land Blues (45429-1) (3:06-3:11) [Orbis BLU NC 061]

rec. August 28, 1928 in Memphis, TN; Furry Lewis, voc, g

"[On] Cannonball, the easiest distinctions are that the instrumental chorus is the sixth on take -1 (Blues Images BIM108) and the fourth on take -2 (Frog DGF22). On -1 the last line of the vocal is 'I would not have this low-down race to run', on -2 it is 'I would not have this race to run.'"
"[...] the two takes of Dry Land Blues can be told apart by the first line. On Blues Images BIM108, this is 'I looked through muddy water and spy dry land,' on Frog DGF22, 'I looked through muddy water, baby, I can see dry land.' There may be some doubt about which take is which numerically, but if Max [Hoeffner] is right that the Blues Images take is the take on 'X' and its derivatives (and I am sure he is), then this is the one traditionally known as -1 and Frog in fact uses the originally issued take which we 'know' from the file card is -2 despite saying it uses -1. This may be no more than a typo somewhere, or alternatively the typo may be 'X's'. We may never know for sure, but pending actual evidence that will be the way they will be listed in B&GR."

rec. by David Evans

"Among my more treasured possessions is a general survey of black rural religious singing, which he produced several years before the disc under consideration. It is called Sorrow Come Pass Me Around, and in terms of superb it is completely off the scale. If nobody has had the foresight to re-issue that LP, and you happen to see it in some expensive second-hand vinyl catalogue, do not pause to worry about how you are going to raise the asking price. Once you have the disc home and on your turntable, all qualms about the bank you so rashly decided to stick up, will be utterly dissipated."
