"His habit of appearing, as if from nowhere, to play an engagement and then disappearing just as suddenly, eventually earned Williams the permanent nickname 'Grey Ghost'."

The mayor of Austin declared December 7, 1987 "Grey Ghost Day," and a year later, voters of The Austin Chronicle's Music Poll voted Williams into the Texas Music Hall of Fame.

In 1940 author and folklorist William A. Owens made a live recording of "Grey Ghost" singing "Hitler Blues" in Navasota. After the song received a write up in TIME magazine, an acetate of it was sent to Alistair Cooke of the BBC for a wartime broadcast.. The recordings Grey Ghost made for Owens in 1940 ("aluminum disc recordings" SERIES. 25) still survive, stored at the Cushing Memorial Library of the Texas A&M University.
